Frequently Asked Questions

We’re proud to be a trusted provider of concrete retaining walls across New Zealand. From initial concept to final build, our team works with precision, care, and a commitment to durability. We understand local conditions, know how to navigate consent processes, and bring deep knowledge of the materials that work best here.

Do Soil Conditions Matter?

A retaining wall is only as good as what it stands on. Before construction, we assess:

  • Soil type and load-bearing capacity

  • Drainage conditions

  • Groundwater levels

  • Risk of frost or soil expansion

In most cases, sandy, well-drained soils are ideal. We highly recommend a geotechnical report before starting any substantial retaining wall project, especially for walls over 1.5 metres in height or where challenging ground conditions exist.

Drainage: The Key to Longevity

Poor drainage is the #1 reason retaining walls fail. Our concrete and block systems are designed to allow water to escape—reducing hydrostatic pressure and avoiding long-term damage. Depending on the site, we may include:

  • Backfilled drainage gravel

  • Weep holes

  • Drainage pipes or geogrid systems

For gravity walls, the mortarless design provides natural water pathways—keeping your wall dry and intact for years to come.

Do I Need Building Consent?

Under NZ building regulations:

No consent is required for retaining walls under 1.5m in height (unless they support a structure or driveway).

If your wall exceeds that height or varies significantly, building consent may be required.

We’re happy to advise you through the process, including liaising with engineers and council if needed.

Cost of a Concrete Retaining Wall?

There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to cost. Factors like:

  • Site access

  • Wall height and length

  • Engineering requirements

  • Block type and finish

…all play a part in your quote. The best way to get accurate pricing is to talk to our team—we’ll assess your site and help you plan a solution that suits your needs and budget.
